Mapping Conflict

Part 1: Use the following resources to create an annotated map of recent conflicts:

• World101 - Eight “Hot Wars” During the Cold War
• World101 - Understanding Northern Ireland’s ‘Troubles’
• Conflicts: Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Congo, Nicaragua, Chile, Angola, Afghanistan, Northern Ireland
• Directions: Locate, label, and identify the following information for each conflict:
  • Country name/region
  • Year(s) of conflict
  • Intrastate or interstate conflict
  • Was it a proxy war?
  • Main reason for conflict

Part 2: Use the following resources to add to your annotated map of recent conflicts:

• World101 - Resource Conflicts, Explained
• Resource Conflicts: cocoa, diamond, gold, lithium, oil, poppy, timber, water
• Directions: Locate, label, and identify the country listed under each resource conflict example. Include:
  • Country name/region
  • Resource
  • How the resource shapes the conflict

Part 3: When you are finished, discuss the following questions:

• What patterns do you notice about the conflicts on your map? Where do most conflicts occur (or not occur)? What types of conflict are most common? Were most of these conflicts completely isolated or were there larger global implications?
